Sunbeams 3

Week 1

Motive: Musical Idea

Repetition: Repeat the motive

Choose a pattern with your child (stepping up, stepping down, standing still, jump up high, jump down low, stepping up so high, stepping down so low, stepping up and down, stepping down and up).

Ask your child which note they want to start with, and then help them figure out which notes come next based on their pattern.

Get your child to write out their motive on their tinsheet so they can see it visually and then have them play it on the piano. Do they like what they’ve written? If not, feel free to change it.

Once your child is happy with their motive, have them write it in their red activity book on page 31.

Next, add rhythms to the notes so that each bar has the required amount of beats/bread tags. If you need, write them out as a rhythm story.

Now repeat the motive in the following bar without changing anything.

Week 2 Sequence up/down: Move the motive up or down

Using your tin sheet, write out your motive.

Now, decide what new note you want to start on and move the motive to those new notes.

Play it at the piano. Do you like how it sounds If not, change it. Work on it until you like the way it sounds.

Write your new bar in your activity book.

Week 3

Retrograde: Write the notes of the motive backwards (in the same rhythm as the motive appeared forwards)

Inversion: Write the motive upside down, like a mirror image

Composition techniques

Week 4: Adding the LH

This week you need to add a left hand to your composition. This could be single notes or chords.

If you are adding chords, use the W section of your book to find out which chords harmonize nicely with the notes in a certain key.
